The Airfield That Wasn't There
If you look closely at this strike photo notice that there is nothing
to see. We bombed an empty field. But for a good reason and with purpose.
As our troops moved west the Germans prepared fallback fields for the
Luftwaffe to retreat to. This was one of those fields. We bombed it so it
couldn't be used as a fallback field for the Luftwaffe and the German planes
flew around with no place to land and either the pilot bailed out or the
plane crash landed. It was the airfield that wasn't there.
