ART KRAMER'S WWII STORIES
The Battle That Never Was
Sometimes memories trigger remembrances of things long forgotten. This is
about one of the strange moments in war. I remember that we were flying east
toward a target in Germany. I don't rememember what the target was. But as we
flew we spotted a formation of JU-88's in the distance heading west. We
couldn't abort our mission to go after them, and they obviously couldn't abort
theirs to come after us. And we couldn't break radio silence to even report
that we had spotted them. We flew on to our target and when we returned to
base we reported what we saw. We never did find out what they were
after. All that remains is the memory of a battle that never happened.
